Trip Planning
Whether by water or by road there are so many considerations and choices you can make when planning a trip on the Hudson River/Champlain Canal. Primary among them will be travel times.
By water you must remember that canal travel is leisurely, there are speed limits and it takes approximately 20 minutes to travel through a lock. The entire length of the Champlain Canal is 65 miles long and a 10 hour trip. We are located in the middle, 4 hours from Troy and 6 hours from Whitehall. A typical 6- 8 hour day would take you north to the marinas at Whitehall and the lower end of Lake Champlain at Orwell, Chipman’s Point and Westport and south to the Marinas in Troy and below Albany in the Catskills, the Rondout Creek and Kingston.
By land we are 1 hour north of Albany and approximately three and one half hours south to New York City, east to Boston, north to Montreal and west to Syracuse.
When traveling by water, we highly suggest that before you travel you get one of the many guides, charts and publications that are essential to a safe, comfortable and satisfying trip. Look for these your local marina, book or nautical store. We also stock many of them and can help you locate them:
